The knives
We believe that fine knives should be a reflection of who
you are, and they are something special to be appreciated and transmitted from
one generation to another. We also believe that they must be built to be used
day after day in difficult hunting conditions, no matter how pleasant they may
seem. M.G. The handmade
damascus hunting knives are built according to these standards. Our
knives have the reputation of being "overbuilt," and that's fine with
us.
Our knives were originally designed with the African
Professional Hunter in mind. The PH, as they are known, live and breathe
hunting day after day. They hunt the most difficult animals on earth in
exceptionally remote locations. They like equipment that is functional, and
often beautiful. Like a good double rifle made to measure by an English
manufacturer, or a Damascus1 knife. Pursuing hard animals on steep terrain,
where the nearest store is an airplane away, is no place for a careless knife.
So yes, we have a tendency to over build.
Our knives are used by hunters, sportsmen and knife
enthusiasts. Most are used well, while others end up in collections. We, of
course, prefer that you take the nice personalized walnut box with which your
Damascus1 knife came in and used it as a support for your change or jewelry,
and then you put your knife in your hunting package and take it to all the
adventures. Some of our clients prefer our more ornate knives, while others
want simple ones. Some have an ornate knife and then one that they carry on
each trip to the forest. Some customers ask us to build knives for their
kitchens after experiencing them in the field.
Whether you're hunting whitetails on your back, forty moose
and mules in the west, moose in Alaska, Cape buffalo in the Caprivi Strip of
Namibia, wild boar in Europe or red deer in New Zealand, your Damascus1 knife
will be a companion as well. Good ready to serve wherever you take it next.
Knife models
We currently make a variety of models of fixed knife blades
and a limited number of folders. We have all made my hand here at our office in
Ellington, Connecticut. For details on our different knife models and examples
of each, visit our Knives page currently available. Usually, we try to store
some knives of each model at a given time that gives you a good idea of the
different options. You can certainly buy one online, or contact us to make one
to your specifications.
Our knives have traditionally been named in honor of
animals. Given the lineage of our knives, all the originals were named after
the African game.
The knife you choose should reflect your wishes and,
therefore, we offer you many options. We offer different steels, as well as a
variety of different handling materials. We can also make the knife unique with
several types of handmade file work. If you want your name or initials on the
blade, we can certainly do that too. Knife reinforcements and pommels can be
hand-engraved with elegant scroll work, or perhaps something more unique like
your favorite game animals.
If you want something even more unique, just give us a call
and we can make the knife fit your specifications. Maybe you have a design of
your own in mind. Just give us a call and we will be happy to talk about the
possibilities of turning your dream into reality.
Fixed blade against folding knife? Since all our knives come
from a hunting lineage, they are designed to face difficult conditions. This
requires a fixed blade knife. Our fixed knife blades are made from a single
piece of solid steel that runs the entire length of the blade. And generally we
use steel for very thick knives and very high quality. No folding knife can
match this type of performance.
Folding knives have their place of safety. I carry one every
day. They are lightweight and fit easily in a pocket. It's what I wear when I'm
not hunting. It's good for extremes. Cut the rope when necessary, solve a minor
first aid problem or help the children open their gifts on Christmas morning.
M.G. Damascus1 will offer folding knives to the general public at the end of
2018, but do not confuse their capabilities with those of our fixed knife
knives. Both are good, but for the intended purposes.
