My experience has taught me that there is nothing like investigating and starting. I have often said that the hardest part of the hardest project that I completed was passing the decision to start. Once I start, it becomes a matter of problem solving and never give up. The great inventor Thomas Edison wrote: "Many of the failures of life are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up." I have some strong opinions on how a new damascus steel hunting Knives maker should start. I recommend that the first knives are made with simple tools and even improvised. That's the kind of thing that allows you to make knives without spending a lot of money. If the simple method is not for you, it will not hurt my feelings, just take your checkbook and credit cards and head to the city. Do not forget the list of basic tools. About the design It has been said that good designs evolve, and I believe it. When I started making knives, I did not...

Quandaries with handmade damascus folding knives, rating systems and business practices.

In the mid-1980s, when Damascus was making its first appearance in knife shows. I met two well-known Smith masters who promoted their "steel and secret techniques" that made their steel special. It turned out that his steel and / or his techniques were far from special. I warn you to be suspicious of any manufacturer of fake knives that use the word "secret". Manufacturers of forged blades do an excellent job of sharing their knowledge with their colleagues. In addition, there are other hammer schools and INS throughout the United States that allow knowledge of the forged blade to pass from manufacturer to manufacturer. While ABS has excellent guidelines and testing procedures that manufacturers must meet to have their knives pass the tests to get their JS or MS seal. This does not mean that each blade armor will maintain that high standard set for its test blades. Nowadays, you will find that some manufacturers with a JS seal are better than some of the man...

The forged blade conjures up both real and surreal images in the minds of both makers and collectors. Makers let their minds eye see the blade take shape by their hand in their shop.  Every detail is considered until the knife or sword is complete. Handmade Damascus steel Hunting Knife how the maker got a piece of steel to the finished product that they hold in their hand. Delighting in the combination of materials, the quick/light feel in their hand and the balance sought in all fixed blades. Today the majority of makers who forge blades belong to the American Damascus1 Society (ABS). This is not to say that a maker cannot produce an exceptional forged blade if they do not belong to the ABS. The ABS offers three rating levels. First is the Apprentice Smith; this is the entry level for makers who want to learn what forging a blade and making a knife is about. The next two ratings require testing. Journeyman Smith requires the maker to be a member of the ABS for at leas...

The knives

Image
We believe that fine knives should be a reflection of who you are, and they are something special to be appreciated and transmitted from one generation to another. We also believe that they must be built to be used day after day in difficult hunting conditions, no matter how pleasant they may seem. M.G. The handmade damascus hunting knives are built according to these standards. Our knives have the reputation of being "overbuilt," and that's fine with us. Our knives were originally designed with the African Professional Hunter in mind. The PH, as they are known, live and breathe hunting day after day. They hunt the most difficult animals on earth in exceptionally remote locations. They like equipment that is functional, and often beautiful. Like a good double rifle made to measure by an English manufacturer, or a Damascus1 knife. Pursuing hard animals on steep terrain, where the nearest store is an airplane away, is no place for a careless knife. So yes, we hav...
